Distant Replay: Reliving one of MLBs best-ever games Carlton Fisks home run

Bernie Carbo was called on to bat for reliever Roger Moret. Sparky Anderson was on the top step of the dugout, ready to call in left-hander Will McEnaney to pitch to the left-hand hitting Carbo. Anderson said later that he was concerned that the Sox would call on right-handed Juan Beníquez to pinch hit for Carbo if he made the move. Carbo looked overmatched by Eastwick, missing on a swing for a 2–2 count; he fouled off two more pitches late, the latter just barely fought off to avoid a strikeout.

The left foul pole, renamed "Fisk's Pole" in honor of his' famous home run in the 1975 World Series, stands 310 feet away from home plate. During this time, cameramen covering baseball were instructed to follow the flight of the ball. In a 1999 interview, NBC cameraman Lou Gerard said that he had been distracted by a nearby rat. Unable to follow the ball, he kept the camera on Fisk instead.

Or maybe it’s that he gave an especially exaggerated leg kick on the delivery. Meanwhile, the broadcast notes that third-base umpire Larry Barnett received a wire threatening his wife and daughter. He’s under FBI protection, and there are apparently agents in the stands behind third base just in case. Thanks to the internet, the entire NBC broadcast — minus commercials — is available on YouTube. And it opens with a spectacular shot of Luis Tiant Sr. in the crowd.

The Reds scored the winning run in the 9th inning on Joe Morgan's RBI bloop single. Carlton Fisk said famously about the 1975 World Series, "We won that thing 3 games to 4." With a .370 batting average,10 hits, 2 runs batted in, Cincinnati third baseman Pete Rose was named the World Series Most Valuable Player. The Game 7 victory gave the Reds their first championship in 35 years. The Reds have not lost a World Series game since Carlton Fisk's home run, a span of nine straight wins. Carbo’s staying in the game to play left field, Yastrzemski has moved to first base, and here’s Drago to pitch.

I knew Luis Tiant started, I knew Bernie Carbo hit the pinch-hit home run, and I’d seen video of Fisk waving that ball fair countless times. But I’d never seen it in its full context, start to finish. Fisk is one of only nineteen catchers elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame. At this point, the booth is in agreement that what they’d really like to see is a scouting report that shows exactly which pitches Tiant throws. Just wait a few decades, you’ll be able to find how many times his curveball spins. The bottom of the second opens with a conversation about Dwight Evans as a breakout star of the series.

In the top of the ninth, with Reds closer Eastwick on the mound, Rico Petrocelli singled and Evans hit the game-tying home run, sending the game into extra innings. Think about what we now take for granted in televised sports. Prime-time starts, the networks influencing when games are played, cameras placed at unusual vantage points, reaction shots of athletes away from the ball—all of it can be traced to the NBC telecast of Game 6 of the 1975 World Series. What the 1958 NFL title game did for pro football, Game 6 did for televised sports. It is the most influential telecast in the 76 years that baseball has been televised. The overhead shot cuts to a shot of Darcy throwing his final two warmups, and he looks like a dad playing catch on a Saturday.

Many houses had just one television, and the networks packed prime time with shows designed to allow the entire family to gather around the TV set after dinner. Eight o’clock was reserved almost exclusively for dramas and sitcoms. Sports had no footing in network television at 8 p.m.; the networks and advertisers were skeptical that sports could work at that hour because, while they might appeal to dad, they would not win the whole family’s attention. ABC had been running Monday Night Football since 1970, but those games had 9 p.m. Kickoffs, past the “family window” coveted by advertisers. Game 6 of the 1975 World Series was not only perhaps the best game ever played, but it also helped save baseball and forever changed how sports are broadcast on television.

Fisk was born in Bellows Falls, Vermont, but according to Fisk, that was only because Vermont had the nearest hospital to his hometown, Charlestown, New Hampshire. Barnett's failure to call an interference was criticized by NBC television broadcaster Curt Gowdy , who was particularly harsh in his comments, reputedly leading NBC to drop Gowdy from its baseball coverage.
